Wendy was fired from Garfinckel’s today. She overheard a conversation between Gloria and the new ad director whose complete ineptitude makes it imperative that she have no direct competition. She felt that having Wendy as creative director restricted her involvement in the department. Such a common business practice— a new broom sweeps clean, etc. The circumstances and timing of this seem profoundly favorable however. Wendy will receive two months severance pay— and will qualify for unemployment. She had intended to stay at the job only until May, when she and John will leave for New England. Thus in one quick day— this awful job that has drained her so emotionally has fallen away from her. I am exhilarated by sudden dramatic events that bear the mark of fate.
