Watching the evening news on television has become a household habit in the past few weeks. The Iranian takeover of the US embassy in Tehran and holding of American hostages has dominated news broadcasts. The threats to the hostages, the hostility of the Iranian people toward the US, the unspoken possibility of war (Carter has suggested that “military intervention” is not out of the question– all has created a tension, an excitement. Indignation seems to be a general response. There are already inflammatory songs on the radio. America is itching for a fight.
