Sitting on the front steps outside my apartment waiting for Kelly to pick me up. She’s having me over for dinner. Sitting in bright blasts of sunlight.
This cast on my leg has become the bane of my life. I am hobbling along now without the crutches. Not really walking. Just slowly hobbling from point to point. Drinking orange juice and watching Sadie bake herself in the sun with her nose in the air sniffing. People and children are all over the neighborhood. A young girl a few houses away from me sits on her front stoop too and bounces a baby on her knee.
My life is devoid of romance these days. Hum drum days repeat themselves ad nauseam. I go to work and come home. I eat and sleep. I talk to Gene on the phone. But he’s a million miles away. The terrible thing though is that I barely care.
I long to leave this place. I long to get on a plane and fly away– the way I left New York. Leave my clothes and few personal effects and fly off to Key West. My first night there I will meet Him. After dropping off my suitcase and Sadie at a motel– I will wander out for a drink. I will order my drink as the huge ceiling fan whirls above me and the sensual witness of dusk in the islands lure the night on. When I attempt to pay the bartender he tells me my drink has been paid for.
